Music

A few years back I left Spotify. Annual price increases and a general disdain for the platform drove my decision. Since then I've gone back to purchasing music (either CDs or DRM free digital files). I use the Open Subsonic server Navidrome to give myself the same experience of streaming but with my currated collection. My server is private to my LAN. I download the music I want to listen to using a subsonic client. This isn't too dissimilar to my experience on Spotify since I never streamed music on mobile data then either.

Moving off of a music streaming platform I've found I appreciate my music a lot more. On Spotify I often just shuffled my liked songs or listened to discover weekly. Now I tend to listen to albums front to back. Especially with older albums that targeted vinyl or CD this is my favorite way to listen to music. The artists made the album with a particular order in mind and knew people would mostly listen to it in order. I'm not sure how true this is with music created with streaming in mind.

Spotify has continually proven my decision was correct. Promotion of AI generated audio, their disregard for artists, and general platform degredation make me happy to continue consuming music my way.
